This project was focused on improving oral health outcomes in the Hispanic population of Birmingham. Vashti and Katelynn were able to curate over 20 bi-lingual social media videos about oral hygiene and other informational topics in dentistry that were dispersed to multiple Hispanic and Latino organizations in the Birmingham area. These organizations worked with them by posting the videos to their organization’s social media pages, as well as providing them as sources to be shared at community events. These fellows then had the patrons of these events complete a survey evaluating how helpful they felt this content was, based on their understanding of the material and how likely they were to implement new habits. The goal for this year was to increase access to informational content for the Spanish-speaking population, increase oral health literacy, and encourage routine screenings and preventative care. They were able to create an oral health initiative that impacted thousands in their population of interest, exposing them to dental health and hygiene information in a language that they could understand, as well as introducing them to the opportunity to receive care at UAB School of Dentistry.
