Lexi Witherspoon & Mykala Walker

School: UAB School of Public Health (Mykala) & UAB Heersink School of Medicine (Mykala and Lexi)

Site: The Lovelady Center, Birmingham, Alabama

Lexi and Mykala are improving the quality of care for stigmatized patient populations by providing patients with the tools to advocate for themselves and informing healthcare providers of strategies to reduce stigma and bias in practice. They will be teaching a Narrative Medicine course for the women at the Lovelady Center, who have been impacted by incarceration or substance abuse disorder. The women can enroll in the Narrative Medicine course, gaining the skills to understand how their story has affected them through art and be better advocates for this story in society. After the course, the narratives will be utilized in a workshop targeting healthcare providers, who will learn more about the barriers stigmatized patients face and how to combat these barriers.
