Kensley developed and implemented a small-group aural rehabilitation program for older adults with hearing loss. The program included structured sessions focused on hearing aid management, listening skills, and practical communication strategies, with hands-on activities and educational materials to reinforce learning. Participants engaged in group discussions, allowing for peer support and shared experiences. Kensley also conducted outreach through a community health center and local audiology services, and used pre- and post-program surveys to evaluate changes in knowledge, confidence, and communication abilities. Overall, the program improved participants’ confidence, reduced social isolation, and enhanced their ability to navigate everyday communication.
Project Results
- Developed and implemented 3 structured aural rehabilitation sessions
- Engaged 12 participants through group sessions at a community health center
- Administered 9 pre- and post-program surveys to assess changes in knowledge and confidence
- Ensured 100% of participant questions submitted prior to sessions were addressed by program completion
After completion of all sessions:
- 88% of participants reported feeling less socially isolated
- 88% of participants reported confidence in advocating for their communication needs
- 100% of participants reported confidence in cleaning and maintaining hearing instruments
- 100% of participants reported confidence in using hearing instruments correctly
- 88% of participants reported confidence in troubleshooting hearing instrument issues
- 100% of participants reported reduced anxiety or frustration in communication situations
