A Legacy in Action

On April 11, in the midst of an unforgettable 10th Anniversary Celebration of Service, the Alabama chapter of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship unveiled an exciting new tradition — the Legacy of Service Award — and presented it for the very first time.

More than just a new honor, this award represents something bigger: a celebration of what it means to carry the Schweitzer spirit forward long after the Fellowship year ends. It recognizes a Fellow for Life whose commitment to service doesn’t stop at graduation — it deepens, expands, and continues to create meaningful impact in communities near and far.

And for this milestone moment, there could not have been a more fitting inaugural recipient than Dr. Autumn Beavers.

A Birmingham native, Dr. Beavers has built a path defined by purpose, compassion, and a relentless commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. Now completing her general surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she continues to lead with both skill and heart in her work with underserved populations.

Her Schweitzer journey began in 2019–2020, when she created a health careers curriculum for Birmingham City Schools — inspiring young students to see themselves in healthcare and opening doors to future possibilities. But that was only the beginning.

Dr. Beavers has since taken her passion for service across the globe. From serving in the United States Peace Corps in Burkina Faso to earning a Fulbright scholarship and becoming an NIH Fogarty Global Health Fellow in Tanzania, her work has consistently centered on equity, access, and community-driven solutions. In Tanzania, she collaborated with local clinicians and community stakeholders to develop a breast health education and referral program for traditional healers — helping bridge critical gaps between traditional and biomedical care while improving early detection of breast cancer.

Her impact spans continents, with additional work in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Thailand — all driven by a powerful, long-term vision: ensuring access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care for all.

Dr. Beavers’ story is exactly why the Legacy of Service Award was created. She is a living example that the Fellowship is not an endpoint — it’s a launchpad.

As the very first recipient of this award, she not only honors the past 10 years of impact — she sets the standard for the decades to come.
